Copilot Credits

Understand and manage your Copilot credits to optimize your use.

Overview

Copilot credits are the currency that enables you to use the Copilot feature beyond its free usage limits. They are designed to help you budget and pay for your Copilot usage, with a system that correlates credit consumption to Copilot usage.

Users and organizations on any of the free or student plans cannot buy additional credits besides the free balance. To buy additional credits, you will need to upgrade to any of the paid individual or organization plans.

How do credits work?

Every time you interact with Copilot through the Chat tab in the right sidebar, you will be using Copilot credits. The number of credits that will be used on any interaction will depend on the complexity of the prompt and the project. Due to the nature of AI systems, it is not possible to know how many credits a prompt will require beforehand.

Checking how many credits a prompt consumed

To check how many credits were used on a specific prompt, you can check click on the ... at the bottom of the answer.

How do credits get used?

These are the rules that determine who's Copilot credits will be consumed when working in a project that is owned by someone else:

  • If the project is organization-owned and the commenting user is a member of that organization, credits will taken from the organization.
  • If the project is organization-owned and the commenting user is not a member of that organization, credits will taken from the user creating the comment.
  • If the project is owned by a user and not an organization, credits are always taken from the commenting user’s credits.

Types of Credits

Free Credits

  • We want every user to try Copilot, so every plan includes free Copilot credits.
  • Free credits are renewed the first day of every month.
    • Free credits don't have rollover, meaning unused credits from one month do not get added to the following month's balance.
  • Billed at the end of each month based on usage. Read the section below to learn how to manage your credits.
  • Users can set a monthly maximum budget.
  • Budget and credit usage are displayed transparently to the account owner.

Managing Your Credits

All credits are used within the context of the project where Copilot is being referred to. Meaning, if the project is owned by an organization, they are taken from the organization’s credits. If the project is owned by a user, they will be taken from the user that owns the project. Cross-use of credits is not allowed. A user cannot use their credits on organization-owned projects and vice-versa.

Credits are managed slightly differently between users and organizations, see below for managing your credits depending on what user type you are.
